What is your name and what do you do?
My name is Jamille Collins-Allen. I am a Licensed Social Worker and a Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor. I currently serve as the Treatment Director for youth group homes, where I work with young people navigating complex life challenges. Additionally, I facilitate substance abuse counseling groups for adults and serve as the Social Services Director at a skilled nursing facility.
How long have you been doing what you do?
I have been in the field of social services since 2009. My journey began while attending the University of Cincinnati, where I worked at one of the largest homeless shelters in Cincinnati. Since then, I have dedicated my career to supporting vulnerable populations and advocating for meaningful change.
How do you balance your personal life and professional aspirations, particularly in a demanding career?
Balancing a demanding career with personal life requires intentional time management. I make it a priority to schedule time for self-care and ensure my family remains at the center of my life. Networking and building strong professional relationships have also been key in helping me grow in my career while maintaining a sense of balance.
What have been some of your biggest accomplishments?
One of my greatest accomplishments has been sharing knowledge and resources with others. Empowering people through education and advocacy is something I take great pride in. Seeing individuals and communities thrive because of the information and support I’ve provided is truly rewarding.
What have been some of your biggest challenges, and how did you overcome them?
Working in social services comes with many challenges, from navigating systemic barriers to managing the emotional weight of the work. One of the biggest challenges has been ensuring that the individuals I serve receive the resources and advocacy they need. I’ve overcome this by staying committed, continuously educating myself, and seeking guidance from mentors and peers in the field.
Can you share an experience where you witnessed the power of sisterhood or community among women?
A powerful experience of sisterhood was during my time in the YWCA Rising Star Equity and Leadership Program. The level of support, encouragement, and shared wisdom among the women in the program was incredible. We uplifted one another, celebrated each other’s wins, and worked together to become stronger leaders.
How has mentorship played a role in your personal and professional development?
Mentorship has been a crucial part of my journey. Having mentors who have already navigated the path I’m on has provided me with invaluable guidance and accountability. Their experiences and advice have helped me grow both personally and professionally, and I strive to be that same source of support for others.
What role do you think social media plays in promoting or hindering women’s empowerment?
Social media has been a powerful tool for women’s empowerment, providing a platform for women to share their voices, connect, and advocate for change. It has allowed for the visibility of women’s achievements, the spread of critical resources, and the formation of supportive communities. However, it can also present challenges, such as unrealistic standards and online harassment. The key is using social media intentionally to uplift and educate rather than to compare or criticize.
How important is self-care, and what practices do you adopt to prioritize your well-being?
Self-care is essential, especially in a field where I pour so much into others. I make it a priority by setting boundaries, engaging in activities that bring me peace, and maintaining a strong support system. Whether it’s taking time for reflection, exercising, or simply resting, I make sure to care for myself so that I can continue to care for others.
What legacy do you hope to leave for future generations of women?
I hope to leave a legacy of advocacy. I want to be remembered as someone who fought for those who didn’t have a voice, who worked to create equitable opportunities, and who helped pave the way for underrepresented communities to access the resources they need. My mission is to create meaningful change that will continue to impact future generations.
Are there any words of encouragement you would like to give?
Never underestimate the power of your voice, your presence, and your purpose. You are capable of making a difference, no matter how big or small. Stay true to your values, seek support when needed, and always believe in the impact you can create. The world needs what only you can offer.
