Dr. Streat has been a social worker for 22 years and is the founder of a nonprofit called A Path to Fortitude focusing on assisting those with gender identity issues, and assisting trafficking victims to reintegrate back into the community in a healthy way.
Social work has been an ever-evolving career field. With so many years in the field, what have been your challenges in the field of social work? Some challenges in my profession are keeping up with the changing demographics in my community and the various challenges students, families, faculty and the community are experiencing post-pandemic. For example, increased anxiety, depression, financial struggles and lack of socialization.
What are your greatest accomplishments? A few of my greatest accomplishments are completing my doctoral program in Social Work with a specialization in disaster, crisis, and intervention. I would also include raising my daughter as a single mother and being proud of the young woman she has become. She cares about other people, has good self-esteem, and is motivated about her professional career. I would also include, taking the leap to start a nonprofit to assist those with gender identity issues, assisting trafficking victims to reintegrate back into the community in a healthy way, and facilitating a girls empowerment group called Identifying my Worth.
What are your plans for the future? My future plans are to retire from school social work in 5 years and work full-time with my nonprofit. I plan to hire some contractors to assist with the growth of my nonprofit. For example, hiring mentors to provide mentoring services and be able to assist more teens.
